What Makes a Shaft Right for High Swing Speeds?
When you're generating 100+ mph of clubhead speed, three factors become critical:
1. Stiffness Profile
You need enough stiffness to prevent the shaft from over-loading during your transition. Most players in this range do well with Stiff (S) or Extra Stiff (X) flex, but the actual feel varies significantly between manufacturers.
2. Weight
Heavier shafts (65-75g) typically provide better control for faster swingers, though some players prefer lighter options for added speed. The key is finding the weight that lets you repeat your swing consistently.
3. Torque
Lower torque (under 3.5°) helps prevent the face from twisting at impact. This is especially important if you tend to miss with a two-way pattern.
Launch and Spin Considerations
At 100+ mph, you're likely generating plenty of ball speed. The goal shifts from maximizing distance to optimizing launch conditions:
- Target Launch: 10-13 degrees
- Target Spin: 2000-2500 RPM
- Optimal Attack Angle: Slightly positive (1-3 degrees up)
If you're spinning the ball too much, look for low-spin shaft profiles. If you're launching too low, consider a shaft with a softer tip section.
Fitting Tip
Don't just chase the stiffest shaft available. Many 100+ mph swingers actually perform better in S-flex with lower torque than X-flex with higher torque. Let your ball flight data guide the decision.
I see a lot of players in this speed range chase X-flex when they'd actually benefit from a quality S-flex with the right bend profile. The Ventus Blue and HZRDUS Smoke Black are my go-to recommendations for consistent ball strikers. For players who need help squaring the face, the Ventus TR Blue offers slightly more tip stability.
